Book Review – The Mind/Body Prescription: Healing the Body, Healing the Pain

The Mindbody Prescription: Healing the Body, Healing the Pain
by John Sarno

This author was brought to my attention when, within a few months, three people told me of  their experiences with his book, Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection. After reading that book, each one of them had their decade’s long chronic back pain go away.

Intrigued, I got The Mind/Body Prescription: Healing the Body, Healing the Pain, which has a broader scope. It doesn’t deal with just back issues, but all sorts of chronic pain and illnesses, such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, allergies, gastrointestinal issues and much more.

Dr. Sarno specializes in rehabilitation medicine. Over the years, he recognized a correlation between repressed emotions and the pain of chronic illnesses. Deal with the emotion and you get healthier. This book explores the psychology, mechanics, and manifestations.

He doesn’t just leave you with his theory and explanation. The last section of the book gives a treatment plan of what you can do to start getting better. When you’ve been dragged down by pain and illness for years, it’s hard to get enough energy to try something new. This book gives you back some of the power that your illness has taken. You have nothing to lose by reading it.

The Lesson of Saying “No”

The Lesson of Saying “No”

Sunset Crater plant Not long ago, I was urged to lead a bi-weekly group. I knew I was already stretched thin and wouldn’t be able to do it justice. Several times, on several occasions I declined. Then one day, my defenses were down and I was persuaded to lead it “for a short time.” As soon as I agreed, I regretted it.

Over the next couple of weeks, I tried to fit the new responsibility into my schedule. But the realization that I’d made the wrong decision was reinforced over and over. Finally, I called the current leader and said I couldn’t do it.

“It’s my fault. I went against what I knew in my heart,” I said.

Within a day or so, they found a new leader, and she’s doing a fabulous job.

This situation reminded of two valuable lessons I’ve learned over the years.
1. When I say “No” and know that it’s the right answer, stick to it. I don’t have to explain or justify my reasons why.
2. I’m not indispensable. If I don’t step up, someone else will. And if they don’t, maybe the group (or whatever) shouldn’t continue.

When have you gone against what you knew was right for you? How did you feel? Learn from that, and hold to your truth the next time. It’ll save you time, energy, improve your well being and self-respect.

Why is it so hard to change a negative habit?

Why is it so hard to change a negative habit?

Grand Canyon Rim TrailQuestion: Why is it so hard to change a negative habit?

Answer: A bad habit might have gotten its start in early or during a difficult time in your life. Some people may have learned in childhood to eat too much as a way of nurturing themselves. Or, I knew a woman going through a divorce who developed the habit of falling asleep on the couch while
watching television.

At the time the habit formed, the subconscious was just trying to help you: to fit in, to be accepted, to deal with discomfort. You programmed it with the habit. Then the negative habit took on a life of its own, because the subconscious then got the message that “This is what we do to cope.”

Since its automatic, it’s hard to stay aware all the time to begin to break the habit. It’s so easy to fall back into the old pattern. Also, if the subconscious thinks the habit is still necessary, it will fight any weak attempts to change it.

Your conscious mind must become determined and committed to a new habit, both mentally and physically, for the subconscious to cooperate with changing. Although the subconscious must follow the directions of the conscious mind, those directions must be clear and consistent.
