“Everything can be taken from a man but … the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” – Viktor Frankl

You always have the power over your own beliefs and attitudes. Even when you act on ones inherited from your childhood, you have the ability to change them. Viktor Frankl was a psychiatrist who was a prisoner in the concentration camps of World War II. He discovered that, no matter what atrocities were visited upon the prisoners, they always had the power over their attitudes. They could give up and hate their captors, or stay upbeat and remain neutral about the men in uniform. Though the prisoners’ bodies were shackled, their minds had free choice, just as yours does.

Have you started to make progress, to claim more good in your life, only to have some crisis or difficulty block you? That’s pretty normal. It’s the subconscious testing you to see how badly you really want to move forward. It’s a natural process to take one step forward, then two steps back. You’re actually creating a firmer foundation. Your subconscious is simply letting you reaffirm that you don’t like where you were, and do want a greater experience of Life. When you persist to move forward, no matter what, you’ll be able to do so with greater conviction and confidence.

“Everything I need for a successful, fulfilling life is presented to me. I recognize it and accept it. All of my affairs are blessed, and the doors fly open for an even greater experience of an abundance of all good.”

You may not consciously know what you need for more fulfillment, or recognize it when it comes. Keep your mind open for unusual opportunities or connections. By thinking outside the box, you’ll notice potentials more readily. Your subconscious will not only be instructed to bring more good your way, but keep you more alert to become aware of it when it comes.

You’re responsible only for your moods and feelings. You are not responsible for whether your friend or loved one is in a bad mood (unless you did something deliberately to irritate them – and that’s a whole other issue). How they feel is their responsibility. It’s not your job to make them feel better. And trying to do so may actually make the situation worse or last longer. They have the resources within them to take care of it, to improve it, and can do so without your interference. When you back out of it and leave them to it, you may notice they improve more rapidly.

“If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.” – Marcus Aurelius

You filter every situation through your beliefs and attitudes. What annoys you, another person could simply ignore. It all comes down to how you perceive what’s going on. You then react to it according to how you’ve labeled it – either good or bad. But it just is. Your distress is due to how you think it may affect you. And your negative reaction could cause it to impact you unpleasantly. Fortunately, you have the power to take a step back and assess the situation differently, even if it’s simply to be neutral about it. It’s not easy, but when you do, you’ll notice an improvement in your life.

Peace and relaxation is your natural state of being. When you are at rest, your muscles are at ease and energy flows through you. This allows your body and mind to recharge and heal. If you become anxious or upset, this ties up the energy in tense muscles. It doesn’t mean that relaxation isn’t there, it’s just blocked. When you’re able to let go, do or think of something more enjoyable or positive, then relaxation surfaces again. Practice taking a relaxation break every hour for just one minute and notice the difference in how your day goes.

“I am calm, poised and confident at all times, in all circumstances. At the center of my being is a core of security and assurance that all is well. I respond appropriately to stress, pressure, remaining centered and serene.”

Serenity and peace are your true nature and the core of who you are. When you tap into that center, you’re able to stay balanced no matter what happens. Instead of reacting to a situation from a state of fear, you can use all your resources to deal with it in a calmer way. This will give you a much better outcome, and increase your self-confidence.

Your subconscious mind acts on the overall direction of your thinking. If you’re 51% positive during the day, then that tendency overrides the 49% of the negative thoughts you’ve had. The converse is also true. The good news is that you only have to be a little more positive than negative to experience the benefits and have the negative of that day be erased. So every time you catch yourself having a negative thought, deliberately find something to be grateful for or insert an upbeat thought. It takes discipline and awareness, but it’s worth it.

“The most important decision we make is whether we believe we live in a friendly or hostile universe.” – Albert Einstein

This is a choice you make, based on your early training, as well as your experiences. Even if your experiences have shown you difficulty, you can still make a different choice. Optimism can be learned, and is a self-fulfilling prophecy. When you change your belief that your Universe supports you, and that Life cares for you, then you open up the floodgates for more good to come your way.

Have you heard the saying, “There’s no such thing as a mistake?” It’s true. A mistake is simply a mis-take, like a second take of a movie. You may have not done things perfectly the first time, but you have another chance to make them better. This is the way you learn. As a child, you figured out how to balance one block on top of another by trial and error. And that’s all a mistake is. Trying something, and it not turning out as you’d hoped. But as when you were a child, you learned something and get to try again.
