Deal with thoughts during meditation?

Question about affirmations

Question: How do I deal with overwhelming thoughts when I’m trying to meditate?

Answer: It’s normal to have problems with thoughts distracting you during meditation. It happens to those first starting meditation as well as seasoned meditators. It’s one reason why there are so many meditation techniques that use some sort of focus, like a mantra or staring at a candle.

When I use self-hypnosis at the beginning of a meditation, I go deeper than with any other technique. And because you’re focusing on relaxing your body, counting down and then imagining a special place, it helps to calm down the errant thoughts. However, it is a constant practice to keep them calm and not let them distract you.

Whenever you have a thought try to get your attention, bring your focus back to your special place, affirmation or any visualization you’re using. You’re in the process of training your mind. Letting it know that you’re going to take charge. Once you’ve practiced enough to get the thoughts quieter, the next step is to be able to simply observe them and let them go.

Sparks of Insight

The subconscious always is working. You may not be getting the outcome that you want, but that’s not the fault of the subconscious. It’s only doing and giving you what you’ve programmed into it in the past or present. The subconscious has rules, principles, and ways that it functions. And just as with federal law, “Ignorance of the law is no excuse.” Just because you don’t know what those rules are or choose not to follow them doesn’t mean you’re excluded from their effect. To get positive results, focus exclusively on what you want for a couple of minutes, twice a day. Imagine that it’s happening, feel its reality, and take action towards it.

Guided Meditation to Encourage Positive Actions

Have you ever been caught between two decisions? It may be one in which that you habitually take the easy path, and that undermines your well being. What if you could, in the moment,  receive encouragement to choose the more difficult road? This guided meditation will help you encourage and support yourself to take the actions that lead you towards your goals.

Transcript:

Thank you for watching. Wouldn’t it be nice to stop procrastinating, to eat and drink in a way that’s good for your health, to encourage and motivate yourself in a positive way? When you turn away from the path of least resistance to the path that is best for you, you’re building self-respect and demonstrating self-love. Treating yourself kindly, and gently guiding yourself to decisions and actions that support you and your endeavors brings you a better life.

I’m Linda-Ann Stewart, and would like to lead you through a short guided meditation to help you choose the best path that brings you long term benefits. In this meditation, you’ll be encouraging yourself to make positive choices.

If you feel like it, close your eyes. Imagine another version of yourself nearby. This version of yourself knows what your goals are, and knows the actions that can help or hinder your goals. This version of yourself also cares about your well being, is more objective and able to see things more clearly.

Now imagine that you are faced with a choice. It’s a choice between doing what’s familiar, what’s easiest, what will bring you immediate gratification, but will ultimately not be helpful for you… and acting in a more mature, intentional and reasoned way. A way that is better for you and for the outcomes you want.

Now imagine that version of yourself is encouraging you to make the more difficult, but more enriching choice. This part of you gives you reasons for for making those choices, and reminds you that you will ultimately feel better about yourself. This part’s guidance is reassuring and inspiring to you.

Imagine that you follow that version of yourself’s advice. That you make the choice it recommends. It could be to eat healthy foods, do the task you’ve been avoiding, or take action towards your goal. Imagine yourself acting on the decision and how you feel good about yourself once you’ve done so. Your choice leads to an outcome that benefits you in the long term.

Open your eyes. The version of yourself I mention can help by supporting you in making decisions that will improve your well being. In a way, you’re being your own cheerleader. When you take the time to check in with that more objective part of you, you’ll recognize the guidance that can keep you on course. Acting on that advice demonstrates your care for yourself.

Guided Meditation for Kindness

Do you want to be happier, more positive, kinder and have better emotional control? Studies show that meditating on kindness and compassion can bring you all that and more. Linda-Ann leads you through a short meditation that induces a sense of compassion towards yourself and others. And you’ll also learn how you can maximize its effectiveness in your daily life.

Transcript:

Thank you for joining me. Do you want to be happier, more positive, kinder and have better emotional control? There’s a very simple way to do that. It’s by meditating on kindness and compassion. Within two weeks of practicing this type of meditation every day, you’ll notice an improvement in all that I mentioned.

I’m Linda-Ann Stewart, a vision strategist. This type of meditation will also cause you to feel better about achieving your goals. A meditation like this will actually change your brain to cause you to be more compassionate. Isn’t that amazing?

To give you an idea of how to do it, I’m going to lead you through a very short example of this type of meditation.

Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Bring to mind someone you love and care about deeply. As you think of them, imagine a warmth in and around your heart towards this person. Notice your feelings of love, caring, well being and good will towards this person. You want the best for them. Imagine a golden light surrounds your heart and contains all of these beautiful feelings. Imagine that light goes out towards that person, filling them with all these wonderful feelings.

As you do, say phrases like the following to yourself, feeling each one as a wish for that person:

May you be whole.

May you be well.

May you filled with peace.

May you be happy.

Take a deep breath. Now, imagine all the good wishes from that golden light directed towards yourself. Feel them. Again, repeat phrases like the following:

May I be whole.

May I be well.

May I filled with peace.

May I be happy.

Take a deep breath… and open your eyes. It feels good, doesn’t it?

You don’t have to use the phrases the I used. Find phrases that work for you. The best results happen when you do this type of meditation for 30 minutes a day. As you go through the process, you can add different types of people.

For instance, imagine an acquaintance or someone neutral, someone that you know but don’t really feel one way or the other about. Send them compassion. And then imagine someone that you’ve had a falling out with, a conflict with, or some other negative experience with. Send them good will. This meditation will help to free you from the burden of the negative emotions associated with that person.

Although the recommendation is to devote 30 minutes a day to the meditation, once you know how to do it, you can practice it at any time during the day. When you get up, you can send good wishes to your loved ones. On the way to work, you can send good will to your fellow commuters. And, eventually, when you have to deal with a grumpy boss or nasty customer, you can imagine sending them kindness. It may not improve their disposition, but it’ll do wonders for yours.

I’ll post links to a recordings that can help you. The first is a Compassion Meditation by the Greater Good Science Center that will lead you through the entire half-hour sequence. The second is a short song on Loving-Kindness,  by Karen Drucker. You can memorize the easy chant and use it during your daily life. It’s one I sometimes use when I’m walking or when I’m driving.

Creating A Treasure Map To Achieve Your Desires

Article  Comments Off on Creating A Treasure Map To Achieve Your Desires
May 212020

by Linda-Ann Stewart

Sages say, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” This is true because images are the way the subconscious mind processes information. A word or verbal phrase translates into images in the inner mind. Think of the difference between reading “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” versus watching the movie. Which one was more powerful and evoked more emotions? Most likely it was the movie. The words on the page had to be transformed into mental pictures, but the movie was in the very language of the subconscious, thus grabbed it more directly.

This is why so many goal setting techniques suggest using visualization and cutting out pictures of what you want to help to manifest your desires. We co-create our world by the images we hold in our minds. Looking at pictures of our goals helps to keep our minds focused on what we want. There are lots of different terms for this technique. Master Mind designates it “image book pages,” Joseph Murphy and Mary Katherine MacDougall call it “treasure mapping,” and Catherine Ponder’s phrase for it is a “wheel of fortune.” More recently, they’ve been called, “vision boards” or “dream boards.”

The Basic Technique

No matter what it’s called the basic technique is the same. A person cuts out and collects pictures from magazines that represent what he/she wants. The action of finding the pictures, cutting them out, then pasting them onto paper helps to convince the subconscious that you really do want this goal. The pictures may simply evoke the feeling of the desired result, such as a sunset for peace, or a lit candle for enlightenment, or specific pictures of a cruise, car, income or job. The idea is to find pictures that speak to you. For a job, you might find pictures of someone doing that specific job, or a picture that symbolizes it to you.

Underneath the pictures, you write an affirmation that directs the mind. The affirmation can be “I know that my Higher Mind wants this for me, and my creative mind finds the best way for it to manifest” or “I now have a lavish income of X coming to me easily and freely.” Any statement that clarifies your goal and supports the belief that Spirit is manifesting it now will work. This helps keep you aware that the Universe wants this for you as much as you want it for yourself.

Different Ways to Use the Basic Technique

There are different ways to use the basic technique. For a single goal, such as a job, relationship, travel, or new house or car, you can get a page of colored construction paper or large posterboard and paste the pictures on it. Use a color that connects with you and your goal. Such as green or gold for prosperity, blue or green for relationships or relaxation, red or orange for a new position or some change in your life, purple or lavender for spiritual growth. I had a friend who created a treasure map and placed it on the inside of the door to her closet, where she saw it every day. You can also use a corkboard or styrofoam to pin the pictures and affirmations to, and change them as you choose.

For several different goals, you can get a posterboard and divide it into the areas of your goals. You could segment it into four parts, such as: work, play, relationships, and health. Then paste the pictures and write the affirmations as you would with a single sheet in each area. At the center, you could have a picture and affirmation that recognizes that the Universe is the Source of your good.

Another Way to Use the Basic Technique

One of my early metaphysical teachers used a notebook for his treasure map. He was a businessman and kept it in a drawer of his desk to look at several times a day and said that all of the desires he put into it came to pass. You can take a folder with fasteners, like you used in school, and put pictures and affirmations on sheets of unruled paper. Again, each goal should have its own separate sheet of paper.

How to Use the Treasure Map

With a treasure map, you need to have it where you can look at it several times a day, but where no one else can see it, such as a closet or drawer. This keeps it private, between you and your Higher Self. If you have someone who will be completely supportive of your goal, you can share it with them. Look at your map several times a day and each time give thanks that the Universe and your creative mind has already given you what the pictures represent. By giving your mind a picture of your desire, keeping your attention focused on it, the Universe will find the perfect way to transport you to your destination.

Affirmation:

I know that the Universe wants the best for me, the Highest Good of abundance, health, harmony, ease and comfort. As I put the pictures of what I want into my mind, it powers my Higher Mind to create a perfect outcome. I don’t need to know how it will manifest. My Higher Mind knows just the right way to deliver me to my desire. I give thanks, knowing that the Universe has already granted me what I want.

The pandemic and shut-down have created sudden change in our society and world. To be able to emerge from this situation in a better condition than when you entered it, the way you think about it must change. Here’s a short meditation to help you shift your attitude and look forward to a better future.

Transcript:

Thank you for joining me. I’d like to share a short guided meditation to help you emerge from this restrictive situation in a better condition than you were when you entered it. I’m Linda-Ann Stewart, a vision strategist and hypnotherapist.

The pandemic and shut-down have created sudden change in our society and world. Many of these changes are going to be temporary and some are going to be permanent. Life is always changing, but usually it does so at a slightly slower pace. This one has happened almost overnight.

If you get stuck in fear or negativity, then it’s likely you not going to be able to respond in a productive way. When you can think differently about a situation, this causes you to make different decisions and act in a way that’s more beneficial for you. That’s what this guided meditation is designed to help you to do.

If you’d like, close your eyes. If not, just lean back, relax and listen.

Life is full of change. Any change is messy and uncomfortable to go through, but it generally leads to a better world. It’s human nature to resist change, but change happens anyway.

The sooner you can get to a level of acceptance of the change, the easier it will be for you to adapt to what’s happened. You accept the reality of change now, and make choices that improve your ability to adjust to the changes.

You shift into responding to the situation in a safe and positive way, taking care of your health and well being. You open up to new knowledge and understanding that helps propel you forward.

You have the ability to come through this situation stronger and better than before. Your inner resources find a way to create a wonderful, improved life for you.

Imagine that the situation is a transition to a new, and better reality for you. You may not understand how it could be better, but just imagine being in the future, and you feel wonderful.

Imagine looking back, into the past, and being satisfied that you have come through it happier, healthier and more whole. And now you look into the future that is brighter and better than you could ever have imagined.

Open your eyes.

A guided meditation such as this can help you keep your thoughts positive and open the way for a better life. Take the ideas from the meditation and use it every day to support you in your next steps to your future.

Guided Meditation to Create Your Ideal Life

What would your ideal life be for you? Once you decide what that is, you can create a plan to achieve it. Taking steps each day towards your vision will mean that you will achieve it. Use this meditation to imagine what your life would be like and rehearse your next steps. This will make it easier to follow through on them and accomplish your vision one step at a time.

Thank you for joining me. I’m Linda-Ann Stewart, and I’d like to share a meditation with you to help you create your ideal life.

First, do you know what your dream life would be for you? Think about what would be reasonable and within your control to achieve. Once you’ve gotten an idea of what that would be, develop your vision for it. A vision is important as a guide and to help you stay on course.

Your vision may be several months or years ahead, and it’s hard to work towards something that far away. So just think about the next 90 days. What specific actions can you take towards your vision and achieve within the next 3 months?

Now, let’s do a short guided imagery for it.

If you want, close your eyes. And imagine far into the future, that you’ve accomplished the vision you’ve created. How do you feel living it? How are you acting? How have things changed from when you first thought about it? Are there new beliefs, attitudes or habits you’ve developed along the way? Allow yourself to feel joyful at having reached your vision.

Now, return to today. Imagine your vision in the distance. And now imagine the next 90 days. How much of your vision can you reasonably achieve within that time frame? What small actions can you take in the next week, month, and the month after that to step in the direction of your vision?

Imagine yourself taking your next action steps. Consider how it will feel to have completed them. Commit yourself to taking them. What can you do today and tomorrow that will take you in that direction? Every step that you take brings you closer to your goal.

Open your eyes. When you mentally imagine and rehearse your actions, it makes it easier to follow through with them in the real world. Write down your immediate actions and decide when and how you’re going to take them. Be specific. As they say, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”

If you’d to achieve your 90-day goal more easily, download my free comprehensive Strategic Vision blueprint. You’ll receive the blueprint, as well as tips and directions about the 4 vital areas that support you in you in accomplishing your goal. Thank you for watching. I know you can begin fulfilling your vision by taking steps towards it each day. What action step are you willing to take today?
