Are you as successful as you’d like, either personally or professionally? Probably not, because there’s always room for improvement, isn’t there? One of the main places to address to help you rise higher in your life is your mindset. So I’d like to talk a little bit about why a positive mindset is so important and some tips to keep you upbeat that allows you to program your mind for success.

I’m a vision strategist. I work with women service professionals and small business entrepreneurs chart a course for their business that keeps them focused and on track so they experience success on their terms.

And a major part of our work is to align their heart (mindset and passion) with their vision. Do you have problems with your mindset being positive? When I say ‘mindset,’ I’m not just talking about having positive beliefs or attitudes.

Your mindset is a combination of combination of thoughts, beliefs and attitudes about yourself, your vision and your business. It affects your actions, behaviors and the way people respond to you. And it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. You could set yourself up to fulfill a negative expectation when you don’t take an action that would benefit you, or go into a situation believing you’ll fail. Had a situation like that? Having a positive attitude could be helpful because it could improve the overall quality of your mindset.

A positive attitude isn’t a guarantee of success. I wish it was. But you have a much higher likelihood of being successful if you have a positive attitude versus having a negative attitude.

To be more positive, you have to start cleaning up your exposure to negativity, and focus more on activities, mental nourishment and associations that are more constructive. I don’t suggest you just wall yourself off from distressing news and only surround yourself with good cheer and live in a happy cloud. It’s important that you keep up with current events and exercise your compassion and empathy. I just mean don’t get stuck or wallow in painful or upsetting news and information. You want to stay balanced and realistic, just not succumb to pessimism and cynicism.

Do things that keep you upbeat, positive and open to the possibilities. Here are 4 tips on how to do this:

1. Minimize your news consumption. You can be aware and knowledgeable about what’s going on without watching or reading the news 24/7. Focus on what you can change, first in your life, and then in the world.

2. Read uplifting books.
These can be self-help, personal development, spiritual, biographies of those who have overcome odds, novels. In essence, anything that causes you to feel empowered and creates a belief that you can meet any challenge life throws at you. Because you can.

3. Watch inspirational videos. YouTube and the internet is filled with these. Check out TedTalks. You could also watch funny videos that raise your mood.

4. Associate with positive people. We all know people who enjoy criticizing, putting others down and ridiculing them. Avoid them as much as you can. Instead, surround yourself as much as possible with those who are optimistic, encouraging and constructive. You become like those you hang around with.

These are just a few tips on how to focus on the positive side of life. If you do a little research, you can find many others, such as positive self-talk and exercise. As you keep your attention on the positive, you’re building new, more resourceful pathways in the brain, so it becomes easier as time goes on. And it lifts your entire mindset, so your actions are more influential and effective.

This is another way of putting the old idea of, “Do you see the glass as half full or half empty?” Studies have shown that the way you approach life, with optimism or pessimism, can predict how successful you’ll be. When you see opportunity in every situation, whether it appears to be beneficial or detrimental, then you’ll likely reap the reality of your attitude.

The Myth of Hypnosis in Entertainment

The Myth of Hypnosis in Entertainment

Image result for incredibles 2 images downloadMy husband and I recently went to the movies and saw Incredibles 2. It was a fun movie and worth the 14 year wait since the first one. However, as Hollywood tends to do, it once again promoted misconceptions about hypnosis. *SIGH* The fictional device about hypnosis was a major plot point.

A lot of movies and television shows perpetuate the myth that hypnosis will make the subject into a zombie. That the hypnotist will have complete and utter control over what the subject says and does. This is utter nonsense. Hypnosis is a normal process you move in and out of every day.

Whenever I see a show that uses the mythology of hypnosis to build their plot around, I get frustrated and annoyed. Too many people will believe that it’s true. I know. I’ve talked to them and have been dispelling this myth for 30 years. If you’d like a little more explanation about hypnosis, watch my short video, Break Your Trance.

Fortunately, this time, I was able to set aside my frustration and (after a few groans) enjoy the movie. After all, it was a cartoon. I don’t want to spoil the movie for you. If you do see it, have fun. Just remember that the part about hypnosis is as fictional as Elastigirl, Mr. Incredible or any other super hero.

You may not know how to get there, but your subconscious does. Affirm your direction and follow any leads that come to you.

How to Program Yourself for Success

How to Program Yourself for Success

succcess-goldkey_84055-smI’m sure you’ve heard the computer adage, “Garbage in, garbage out.” This means that the machine will operate on whatever data you program into it, whether it’s good or bad, correct or incorrect. The computer will use that information and your result will be based on it. If it’s valid and accurate information, you’ll get a correct outcome. However, if you’ve entered bad data, it will give you a flawed product. It all depends on what the operator (you) feeds into the computer.

The same can be said of your mind. Your mind operates on the ideas you load into it, from the past or present. If you are functioning on false information, you’re going to get outcomes you don’t want. Unless your mental programming supports your goals, vision and dreams, you’re going to undermine your success. Because the Law of Attraction acts on that information, drawing to you want you’ve accepted as true.

The good news is that you can change your programming. You’re always reinforcing commands in your mind by the beliefs you’ve accepted, the attitudes you’ve developed and the statements you say to yourself each day. Your subconscious (your mental computer) and the Law of Attraction act on your beliefs and bring them into a reality in your life. But your subconscious and the Law of Attraction must follow what your conscious mind decides. When your conscious mind makes a new choice and follows through on it, your subconscious and the Law of Attraction must comply and attract the equivalent.

Follow these steps to program yourself for success:

1. Change your beliefs. Are you programming yourself for what you want or what you don’t want? If you aren’t getting the results you want, assess what your beliefs about it might be. You can change your beliefs, because they’re only ideas that you’ve focused on so long that they’ve gotten to be habits. And you know you can change a habit, right? What belief do you need to have to get the outcome you want?

2. Use auto-suggestion. Every day, you’re giving yourself suggestions that impress your subconscious mind and the Law of Attraction. It They then seeks out opportunities to make the suggestions true. Once you’ve recognized what belief you need to have, write an auto-suggestion for it, in the second or third person positive. Such as an old favorite, “Every day, in every way, you’re getting better and better.” Or, “Every day, in every way, [your name] is getting better and better.” Repeat your statement out loud for a minimum of 5 minutes every day. Or repeat it to yourself as you’re going to sleep at night. Or both.

3. Use visualization. Many people think that visualization is like seeing something on a movie screen. That’s a fallacy. Imagine what your living room looks like. That’s the way you’ll experience visualization. Imagine your acting on any steps towards your goal or dream. This is like a mental rehearsal and imprints your desires on your subconscious and Law of Attraction. Then imagine that your goal or dream is accomplished and how it makes you feel. You can do this at the same time as you’re using auto-suggestion. It instructs your subconscious mind and Law of Attraction to find ways to fulfill your desires.

4. Focus on your vision.
Keep your attention on your intention. When you do, your actions will follow. And this helps you avoid getting distracted. If you do find yourself getting sidetracked, just get refocused and keep moving. Setbacks are normal. Don’t get discouraged. They give you valuable feedback on what you need to do to correct your course and keep moving forward.

Reprogramming your mind takes commitment and persistence. You’re having to change the course of the stream of your thoughts. You’ll have to move rocks (beliefs) and earth (thoughts) to metaphorically create a new channel. But it can be done as long as you’re determined to succeed.

Affirmation:

The Universe completely supports my endeavors, wanting me to have the best. I accept that I deserve the best and have the ability to create it through the power of my Higher Mind. By keeping my mind focused on my dream and desire, I provide the channel through which the Universe sends my good to me.

Sparks of Insight“It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect it’s successful outcome.” – William James

If you begin a project with that belief that it’s going to fail, guess what? It probably will. However, if at the start of the process, you have the attitude that success is a strong possibility, if not probability, and that you’re going to do whatever you have to bring it about, then you have a very good chance of being successful. At the beginning of any change, project, or task, check your negative attitude at the door. It doesn’t pay to carry it forward.

The Self-Healing Personality: Why Some People Achieve Health and Others Succumb to Illness
by Dr. Howard S. Friedman

Most of us have heard that our thinking affects not only our lives, but also our health. Unfortunately, many times that concept is dealt with in a simplistic, cookbook type of way. The belief is that a certain ailment always is due to a particular thought pattern. Although the basic idea has merit, the reality is much more complicated than that.

Dr. Friedman, professor of psychology at the University of California at Riverside, has done extensive research into why one person is able to recover from a serious illness, and another isn’t. Bringing together ancient medical philosophy and modern studies, he explores the differences between people with the same disease. He has found that there is a connection between emotions, personality and how resilient a person is, and disease.

Though a person might have an illness-prone personality, this book gives hope that they can turn themselves into one that self-heals. Making practical, healthy changes in habits, as well as finding social support are a couple of ways the author has found to be useful. By learning new ways to respond to the challenges of life, a person can actually impact the way their body heals.
