A lot of people have a strong inner critic that tears them down, no matter what they do. Instead of helping you, this can undermine your confidence and motivation. To combat this critical inner voice, build yourself up by appreciating yourself and what you do. Linda-Ann will share some specific tips that will cause you to feel better about yourself and accomplish more.

Transcript:

Thank you for joining me. I’m LAS. A lot of people have a strong inner critic. Do you? It’s a part of you who is always criticizing you and everything you do… or don’t do. It tells you that you’re not good enough, not doing enough, not accomplishing enough… just not enough.

Many of my clients have said that they just didn’t feel like they were enough. That was the way they put it, “I don’t feel like I’m enough.” Have you ever felt that way? You may think that always criticizing yourself can push you to do more, but the opposite is, in fact, true. It can actually sabotage you because it undermines your confidence and motivation. I mean, why try when it’s never enough, right?

Today, I want to give you some specific ways you can respond to the constant criticism you hear from yourself. These tips help to shift your attention to something more positive and build you up rather than tear you down. It’s something I do with my clients, both in my coaching and hypnotherapy practice.

Linda-Ann Stewart of Heartvision Consulting, vision strategist. Using my 30 years of experience as a hypnotherapist, I help women business owners and entrepreneurs align their heart with their vision, chart their course and focus on the strategies that will bring them greater success and prosperity on their terms.

When we talk, I urge them to pay attention to what has changed or improved since our last session. To what they have accomplished. Many of them first tell me nothing is different. But as they talk, they realize just how much has changed and what they have accomplished.

We focus on their progress, and by doing so, are able to build on it. It’s a simple technique of acknowledging what they’ve done, instead of focusing on what they haven’t done. When you focus on what you HAVE done, then you’re motivated to do more. You build up momentum, because you’re feeling successful. And success breeds success.

For instance, I once had a friend, Laura, who used this technique of acknowledging what she’d done. She had a strong inner critic that paralyzed her. Do you ever feel that way? She discovered a way to combat that inner critic. She’d acknowledge her small wins each day. In her journal, she’d list that she’d eaten breakfast, fed the dog, washed her dishes, etc.

These are all daily tasks that had to be done each day, right? And you might wonder why she’d write down these daily tasks shortly after she got up. But it made her feel like she’d accomplished something. It triggered the reward circuit in her brain and released pleasure chemicals into her body. It energized her to keep going and do more. It got her out of the paralysis. Sounds good, right?

I’m sure you’ve heard of a gratitude journal, where you write down things that you’re grateful for each day. Some research is now showing that doing the same thing with your accomplishments, no matter how small, can turn your mood around and make you feel more motivated. It can make you feel like you’re good enough, just like when my clients would start to acknowledge their changes. Acknowledging 3 small wins each day for 7 days can lift your self-esteem for 3 months. Wouldn’t that be great? And it’s simple to do.

Just make a commitment to recognize what you’ve done during the day. It can be in a journal form, or on your phone or calendar. You can acknowledge small achievements, like my friend Laura did, or bigger ones. But don’t just limit this to your accomplishments. Also recognize when you’ve made a small step forward. Not just that you’ve finished a project, but that you’ve worked on a small part of it. Give yourself credit for your effort, not just the results. What can you acknowledge yourself for today?

For instance, acknowledge when you declined that donut, or only had one bite of it, or had a salad for lunch. When you balanced your checkbook or paid down your credit card. Or when you made that one follow up call you’d been dreading. All of these are valid actions to celebrate.

Other items you can appreciate about yourself are your strengths, your values, and your talents. For instance, you are consistent in sending out an ezine every month. That’s something to acknowledge. Or when you fulfill a promise, to yourself or someone else, like being on time for a lunch date. Or if you’ve been wanting to draw, and finally put a pencil to paper, that’s something to be proud of.

When you begin to focus on what’s good about you and what you do, instead of what’s negative, you’ll feel better about yourself. You’re praising yourself for being who you are in your life. You’ll feel like you’re making progress, which is important. Because progress means you’re moving forward. It’s encouraging and inspiring. And isn’t that a better way to motivate yourself?

“The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.” William James, pioneer in psychology

Most of us tend to be hard on ourselves. We’re highly self-critical, paying more attention to what we haven’t done than what we have. Although we think this helps push us to be better, to achieve our goals, it actually does the opposite. Criticizing yourself is demoralizing and discouraging, and it undermines your motivation and productivity. It makes you feel unworthy and like you’re never good enough. Being self-critical can paralyze you rather than boost you to get more done. It also disconnects you from your inner self and the Universe, making it harder to access your intuition or activate the Law of Attraction.

We’re also taught not to blow our own horn or shamelessly shout our own praise to the world. That’s considered to be prideful and self-centered. So we tend to hide our accomplishments and brush aside compliments. At the same time, we secretly crave acknowledgement and appreciation. These are normal and appropriate desires. It’s only when we abandon ourselves to seek approval from others that these natural impulses can become toxic.

What It Means to Acknowledge Yourself

But how can you find the appreciation you crave, when seeking it from others is disempowering? And how can you drive yourself without making yourself feel insignificant for not doing enough? The way you find this satisfaction is by acknowledging yourself and your accomplishments. When you do, you’re not being conceited or vain, but being honest about your efforts. Acknowledging yourself has nothing to do with building up your ego to feel better than someone else. It has nothing to do with anyone but you and what’s right about you. This is the way the Universe has always seen you.

By acknowledging yourself, you are simply recognizing your authenticity and accomplishments. You give yourself credit for what you do and who you are. This connects you with your center and the Universe, which has always believed in you. You also have more clarity to direct the Law of Attraction. As you support yourself with this kindness and honesty, you validate yourself and accept that you have value.

The Reasons to Acknowledge Yourself

One of the things I do with clients is to have them acknowledge themselves and celebrate their accomplishments. Most of the time, they don’t realize how much they’ve done or how things have changed until we do this exercise. The following are tangible benefits of acknowledging yourself.

1. Raises your self-esteem. Your self-esteem derives from your sense of how much you respect yourself. When you begin to notice what’s good about you and what you have attained, your self-worth rises and you self-image improves. You believe more in yourself and your abilities, which mean you are willing to expand out of your comfort zone.

2. Increases your motivation. Don’t you want to do more when you feel like you’re making progress? For instance, you start to go through a pile of papers, filing things, and once you see how much you’ve whittled it down, you want to do more. The same is true when you pay attention to even the small wins in a day. It energizes and inspires you. You feel encouraged and to reach for more.

3. Improves your mood. Don’t you feel good when you check off tasks that you’ve completed? It activates the reward circuit in the brain and triggers the release of pleasure chemicals. The same is true when you celebrate your efforts. You feel better about yourself and life, and have more resources to deal with challenges.

Give yourself permission to celebrate who you are and your accomplishments. Consider your good qualities, your efforts, and your progress. By making this a daily practice, your life will be richer and happier. You’ll be meeting one of your deepest needs and empower yourself to fulfill more of your potential. The Universe would approve. What can you do today to acknowledge yourself?

Affirmation:

The Universe appreciates me just as I am. It believes in me and knows that I can achieve whatever I desire. I now give myself permission to acknowledge what’s good about me and the good that I do. I know that the Universe approves of and supports me in this activity.

Are you as successful as you’d like, either personally or professionally? Probably not, because there’s always room for improvement, isn’t there? One of the main places to address to help you rise higher in your life is your mindset. So I’d like to talk a little bit about why a positive mindset is so important and some tips to keep you upbeat that allows you to program your mind for success.

I’m a vision strategist. I work with women service professionals and small business entrepreneurs chart a course for their business that keeps them focused and on track so they experience success on their terms.

And a major part of our work is to align their heart (mindset and passion) with their vision. Do you have problems with your mindset being positive? When I say ‘mindset,’ I’m not just talking about having positive beliefs or attitudes.

Your mindset is a combination of combination of thoughts, beliefs and attitudes about yourself, your vision and your business. It affects your actions, behaviors and the way people respond to you. And it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. You could set yourself up to fulfill a negative expectation when you don’t take an action that would benefit you, or go into a situation believing you’ll fail. Had a situation like that? Having a positive attitude could be helpful because it could improve the overall quality of your mindset.

A positive attitude isn’t a guarantee of success. I wish it was. But you have a much higher likelihood of being successful if you have a positive attitude versus having a negative attitude.

To be more positive, you have to start cleaning up your exposure to negativity, and focus more on activities, mental nourishment and associations that are more constructive. I don’t suggest you just wall yourself off from distressing news and only surround yourself with good cheer and live in a happy cloud. It’s important that you keep up with current events and exercise your compassion and empathy. I just mean don’t get stuck or wallow in painful or upsetting news and information. You want to stay balanced and realistic, just not succumb to pessimism and cynicism.

Do things that keep you upbeat, positive and open to the possibilities. Here are 4 tips on how to do this:

1. Minimize your news consumption. You can be aware and knowledgeable about what’s going on without watching or reading the news 24/7. Focus on what you can change, first in your life, and then in the world.

2. Read uplifting books.
These can be self-help, personal development, spiritual, biographies of those who have overcome odds, novels. In essence, anything that causes you to feel empowered and creates a belief that you can meet any challenge life throws at you. Because you can.

3. Watch inspirational videos. YouTube and the internet is filled with these. Check out TedTalks. You could also watch funny videos that raise your mood.

4. Associate with positive people. We all know people who enjoy criticizing, putting others down and ridiculing them. Avoid them as much as you can. Instead, surround yourself as much as possible with those who are optimistic, encouraging and constructive. You become like those you hang around with.

These are just a few tips on how to focus on the positive side of life. If you do a little research, you can find many others, such as positive self-talk and exercise. As you keep your attention on the positive, you’re building new, more resourceful pathways in the brain, so it becomes easier as time goes on. And it lifts your entire mindset, so your actions are more influential and effective.

If you’d like more tips on how to increase your productivity and accelerate your success, as well as another tip on how to be more positive, download my free guide, Take Control of Your Day.

Thank you for watching. I hope you take these tips and use them to create more success in your life.

Sparks of Insight“The optimist sees opportunity in every danger; the pessimist sees danger in every opportunity.” – Winston Churchill

This is another way of putting the old idea of, “Do you see the glass as half full or half empty?” Studies have shown that the way you approach life, with optimism or pessimism, can predict how successful you’ll be. When you see opportunity in every situation, whether it appears to be beneficial or detrimental, then you’ll likely reap the reality of your attitude.

Sparks of Insight“It is our attitude at the beginning of a difficult task which, more than anything else, will affect it’s successful outcome.” – William James

If you begin a project with that belief that it’s going to fail, guess what? It probably will. However, if at the start of the process, you have the attitude that success is a strong possibility, if not probability, and that you’re going to do whatever you have to bring it about, then you have a very good chance of being successful. At the beginning of any change, project, or task, check your negative attitude at the door. It doesn’t pay to carry it forward.

Sparks of InsightIn Your Thoughts Can Change Your Life: The Twelve Essential Attitudes for Health, Harmony and Happiness, author Donald Curtis states that Jesus gave us a 3 action steps:
1. “Ask and it shall be given you.”
2. “Seek and ye shall find”
3. “Knock and it shall be opened unto you.”

Ask, believing that you can receive, in meditation and affirmation for what it is that you want. Then go out into the world, asking for guidance every step of the way. No matter what path you take, if you’re open and seeking, you’ll be directed. And persist, not giving up. This convinces the subconscious, which is the part of you that needs convincing, that you really do want it.

Meditation to Accept More Abundance

Would you like to have more abundance in your life? For the most part, the only person preventing it is you. Focusing on negative ideas limits your subconscious mind from finding opportunities in your life. The converse is also true. When you focus more on the positive, your subconscious seeks to help you achieve what you expect. This is a meditation to expand your acceptance of abundance so that your subconscious mind is primed to find it for you.

Transcript:
Would you like to have more abundance in your life? That’s a stupid question, isn’t it? Of course you would. So what’s preventing it? Believe it or not, for the most part, you are. Your old belief in struggle and lack are limiting the amount of abundance you accept. Those old ideas are causing difficulties in your life, because they’re what you expect. And your subconscious tries to help you achieve what you expect.

Another reason you may be restricting abundance is that you may feel uneasy accepting more. Have you ever felt that way? If so, you’re not alone. Many of my clients have had this issue. But that thought pattern is simply a shredded remnant from the past and doesn’t need to affect you anymore.

I’d like to lead you through a short meditation to open yourself to accepting more abundance into your life. When you do, you program your subconscious to scan the environment and seek to create it for you.

Linda-Ann Stewart of Heartvision Consulting, and I’m a vision strategist. You know how women business owners and entrepreneurs spin their wheels and get stuck as their business runs them? Using my 30 years of background as a hypnotherapist, I help them take charge, create strategies that keep them on track and accelerate their business to the next level and beyond. They align their heart with their vision and bring their vision into reality.

To begin to accept more abundance, you have to start with envisioning it flowing to you and then your accepting it. Now, abundance means many things. Health, harmony, peace, joy, prosperity and much more. What does abundance mean to you? How would it feel to have more of it in your life? Let’s start opening yourself up to that.

Close your eyes. Breath. Using your imagination, in any way that works for you, imagine a warm energy, a gold light, like sunshine, flowing down from the heavens towards you. It’s safe and comforting as it approaches. You welcome it. You know that it wants the best for you.

Imagine that you raise your arms to greet it, and create a funnel for it to pour into you. This energy is pure abundance, pure love, pure harmony, grace, joy, health, and all good things. This abundance guides, directs and inspires you along the next steps of your life. Ideas and solutions appear in your mind. New doors open, opportunities show up. Ideas and solutions appear in your mind. Your prosperity expands as you allow more abundance to flow into you. You are at peace as your acceptance of greater abundance grows.

This energy brings avalanches of abundance into your life. You expect the best to happen for you in any situation. Imagine everything falling into place for you. That this energy allows all of your needs be met. You are filled to overflowing the this energy of the abundance of all good. This abundance eases every step you take, making your way smooth and easy.

A golden river of light and good energy pours into and through you into your world, into every situation and circumstance in your life. You embrace this light and energy, allowing it to fill every part of your mind and body. You feel secure, uplifted and joyous. As you go about your day, you remind yourself of this abundance flowing into you, through you and into your world. When you’re ready, open your eyes.

I recommend you take a minute or two every morning to practice this. You may be surprised at what happens when you practice it regularly. Unexpected good will probably come your way. It does in mine when I remember to practice it. Synchronicities can happen to benefit you. I’ve won gift cards and had unexpected opportunities land in my lap. The imagery doesn’t take long and you have everything to gain.

How can I think positively?

Question about affirmationsQuestion: How can I think positively all the time and get my family to do the same?

Answer: Staying positive all the time is hard for anyone to do. The goal is to think positively and optimistically MOST of the time. It’s also difficult to think positively when you’re surrounded by negative people.

Emile Coue, a pioneer in hypnosis, used an affirmation something like “Negative thoughts and negative suggestions have no effect on any level of my mind.” I usually follow it up with, “I accept only positive thoughts and ideas.”

Although you want your family to be more positive, you can’t make them that way. The only person you can change is yourself. Once you’ve made the change, they may look to you as a role model.
