In today’s fast paced world, we experience more stress than ever. A lot of it comes from our feeling like we have no control. When we feel like we have more control, stress and its impact reduces. Wouldn’t you like to be able to channel all that energy into something more productive? Learn 6 simple ways to take control of stress so that you have more clarity and are healthier.

Got stress? We all have it, some more than others. It happens as a result of everything from running late one day to having 3 projects due at once. A lot of our chronic stress is due to feeling out of control or not having any control over conditions. So I wanted to share some ways you can get some control over the stress that I’ll bet you’re experiencing.

I’m Linda-Ann Stewart, a vision strategist. For almost 30 years, I’ve been a hypnotherapist and coach. One of my specialties was to help people deal with stress. We identified the causes and reframed their attitudes about them, as well as giving them other strategies to reduce the stress.
Now, as a vision strategist, I help women entrepreneurs get a clear vision, get focused on its strategies and get back in control so they’re able to accelerate to the next level of their business.
It helps them handle their stress so they can be more successful

You know how, when you’re stressed and can’t get a handle on it, you tend to get overwhelmed easily? You flip into reactive mode. It’s like you have a hammer and everything is a nail. Right? But you hammer things that aren’t nails, and that can be counterproductive. Instead, you need to grab some control so you can deal with things more rationally. Feeling like you have some control also allows you to channel that energy into something productive. Isn’t this what you want?

I want to share 6 easy ways that you can start to manage your stress and get back in control. Are you ready?

1. 1 thing. Take 1 thing you can control and handle that. Handle your email, / turn off your phone notifications so you can get some work done it quiet, / say NO to a request that you know will send you over the edge. I did this last one just recently. Handling 1 thing gives you a center to work from. What 1 thing would that be for you?

2. Daily routine. Instability and never knowing what’s next contributes to stress. Creating security through a daily routine can give you some breathing room. It gives you a sense of organization and control over your time. It’s especially good to have one it the morning, as it sets the mood for your day. Do you have a daily routine?

3. Self-hypnosis / relaxation training. This is one of the things I helped people with in my practice. I led them through some relaxation, and taught them self-hypnosis. I had a client who’d used massage, yoga, and other types of stress management techniques tell me that what we did was the most beneficial of all of them. This helps reset your body and mind, building resiliency. Doesn’t it feel good to relax?

4. Reframe. When you’re anxious or worried, you go into the fight or flight mode and you get paralyzed. Shuts down your thinking processes. But if you’re able to reframe the feeling to excitement or challenge, you’re able to come up with possibilities and be more innovative. Even using different words, such as “hassle” or “pressure,” can reframe the stress. How could you reframe things that stress you?

5. Help others. This one sounds counter intuitive. When you help others, you’re giving your precious resources of time and energy. But studies find that people under stress who helped others didn’t experience the damaging effects of stress. They also felt more satisfied in their lives. Don’t you feel good when you’ve helped someone?

6. Practice meditation or mindfulness, both of which helps the skill of concentration. Yes, concentration, attention and focus are skills. In today’s frenetic world, they’ve gotten rusty. Meditation / mindfulness train you to be more focused. They also keep your mind from spiraling out of control and keeps your attention on what you can handle. It also helps you to let go of what you can’t control. What can you do to build the skill of focus?

Don’t try to do all of these at once. That would throw you back into being overwhelmed and stressed. Take one of them and practice it. Which one would you want to start with? Practice and see if you feel better. Then add another one. The whole idea is for you to take more control. And once shift your attitude towards stress from it being a buggy bear to it being manageable, you’ll have more clarity and be healthier.

Do you set New Year’s Resolutions or goals at the beginning of the year? What if you set and intention for the year instead? A goal is more specific and concrete. An intention is more of a trend or tendency you want to cultivate in your life. Goals can be a part of it, but the intention is more general. This meditation can help you discover what your intention might be and help you be more successful with it.

Do you set New Year’s Resolutions? Goals to achieve that will improve your life? What if you do something different this year. You could do it in addition to your resolutions, and it may be more rewarding. What about setting an intention for the year? In years past, I’ve set intentions such as being more grateful, opening to experience more good, looking for the positive in every situation, being more compassionate and so forth. Whenever I’ve found myself to fall back into the old pattern, I remind myself of the quality I want to cultivate and grow in my life. Is there some quality, value, attitude or action that you want to focus on in this coming year? I’d like to lead you in a meditation to help you discover what that might be, and to be more successful with it.

You can do this with an intention. An intention isn’t a specific goal. It’s more of a trend or tendency you want to develop. Goals can feed into it, but the intention is more general.

This short meditation will allow you to stir up some ideas for your intention. Even if one doesn’t surface for you during it, this meditation will plant the seed and one will probably appear to you within a short time. Idea/concept – get your attention. Trend you notice focusing on in your life.

So, if you’re so inclined, close your eyes, and take a deep breath… Let it out. Let your mind wander to what brings you joy in your life. What are you passionate about? What do you want more of in your life? What kind of change do you want in your life? It could be a value (compassion/kinder), quality (focused/goal oriented), attitude (self-confidence/serenity) or condition (more active/health) that you want to cultivate and grow in your life.

Even if no word, concept or idea surfaces right now, just allow your thoughts to wander through the corridors of your mind. There is something that you’ve been wanting to expand on, to experience more of, to pay attention more to. At some level, you know what it is. You may have a multitude of ideas. Let the most important one or two to become brighter and stronger. And even if you’re not sure, the idea will quickly become more apparent and clearer. Allow it to be short, one or two words, or a short sentence. Something you can easily focus on.

Once you have settled on your intention, how will you express it in your life? How will you apply it? What actions or attitudes will you take to be true to it? How will you support it in your life? And how will your life be different in a year by living this intention? How will you feel?

Your intention becomes your compass, helping you to travel in the direction you’ve chosen. It guides your thoughts and actions, and it brightens your life. Open your eyes.

Did you discover one? Is it the right one for you, or do you need to consider it more? Once you’ve decided on your intention, keep it in front of you so you don’t forget it. You could also find an object, picture or a reminder on your phone to remember to stay true to it. I’ve used stones or shells as reminders. Whatever it is, make sure you look at it frequently so you keep your compass pointed to it.

Give Yourself Permission to Dream

Do you not allow yourself to conceive of a dream you want to accomplish? Many people will deny their dreams and won’t try to strive to fulfill their potential. When you give yourself permission to contemplate your dream, amazing things happen.

Do you know what your dream is? Do you think it’s out of your grasp so you deny a dream exists for you? This could mean that you don’t even allow yourself to know what you want. Maybe you don’t want to be disappointed again, or you believe you can’t achieve it. So you decide not to want anything. It’s safer that way. If you don’t expect anything, you can’t be disappointed.

Whenever a dream begins to rise to the surface, you turn away from it. But your dream is there, ready to be discovered. It’s a longing that you haven’t given voice to. Today, I’d like to talk a little bit about how you can give yourself permission to contemplate your dream. And what can amazing thing that can happen when you do.

I’m Linda-Ann Stewart, a vision strategist. For almost 30 years, I’ve been a hypnotherapist. Clients came to see me to create change in their lives. Over time, I discovered that they had to also have a vision of where they wanted to end up with that change to be truly successful with their change. Now, as a vision strategist, I help women entrepreneurs get clear, focused and get back in control so they’re able to accelerate to the next level of their business. I’ve helped scores of people uncover their dream and achieve the goals to get them there.

If you could have anything you wanted, if everything fell into place for you, if success was assured, what would that dream be? I’m not talking about winning the lottery. I’m talking about your being able to accomplish something for you. Make more money, lose weight, write a book, create a nonprofit. It could be something others consider small, but that would be huge for you. Just consider for a minute what that might be for you. Will you give yourself permission to contemplate what that might be?

It may be hard to envision it. You’ve spent so much time denying it Maybe others told you you couldn’t or shouldn’t have it. If that’s the case, is that true? Probably not. Or you’re afraid of what others will think. But they’re not living your life, are they? You aren’t here to fulfill anyone else’s expectations of you. You’re here to fulfill your potential.

Acknowledge and accept that your dream is yours and you have a right to have it. How does that feel when you accept that idea? You know that the only way you’re going to reach more of your potential is to reach higher. You know the old saying, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’re always going to get what you’ve always got.” So your first step to having something more is to allow yourself to conceive of it.

So give yourself permission to dream. Permission to conceive of something greater. Even if it’s something massive that it seems out of your reach. When you start considering it, and wondering how you could achieve it, your subconscious starts looking for ways to help you. It begins to seek out information and opportunities in your world to support your quest.

One time, I was wondering how I could better promote a workshop I was giving. At the grocery store, I bumped into someone I knew who had an interview show on a local radio station. When I told her what I was doing, not thinking about her show, she offered to interview me. It was my very first radio interview. Has something like this ever happened to you? Syncronicities happen when you give yourself permission to step out of your box and dream bigger.

As Napoleon Hill said, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.” But first you have to give yourself permission to conceive of it. Everything else hinges on that. How can you give yourself permission to dream?

How many roles do you fill? Do you ever feel like they’re pulling you in a hundred different directions all at once? This contributes to a feeling of overwhelm, because you can’t do it all. Learn a couple of techniques of how you can prioritize yourself in a way that supports your mental and physical health.

How many roles do you have? Mother, father, wife, husband, sister/brother, business owner, worker, manager, daughter, son, and on and on? Do you ever feel like they’re pulling you in a hundred different directions all at once? Like you have too many people who want you to help them, or want something from you, and they all want it now? This contributes to a feeling of stress and overwhelm, because you can’t do it all. And trying to can impact your personal and professional life. I’d like to give a couple of suggestions of how you can prioritize yourself in a way that supports your mental and physical health.

I’m Linda-Ann Stewart, a vision strategist. For almost 30 years, I’ve been a hypnotherapist. Clients came to see me to create change in their lives. Over time, I discovered that they had to also have a vision of where they wanted to end up with that change to be truly successful. Now, as a vision strategist, I help women entrepreneurs get clear, focused and get back in control so they’re able to accelerate to the next level of their business.

I don’t know about you, but I’m always fighting against being a people pleaser. In the past, my needs took second place to what others wanted. If a group I was volunteered for asked me to be part of committee, I’d generally say “yes,” even when the time involved impacted my work or well being. The wake-up call came when I got so over involved with different organizations that my health was affected. That’s when I developed the ability to say “no.” I realized I couldn’t be all things to all people, and still be there for myself. I couldn’t please everyone. Can you?

For instance, you know you can’t satisfy all of your potential customers. Some will just be more trouble than they’re worth. You’ll have to choose your values and peace of mind over what they want from you. Setting boundaries on your time may be your first step. For instance, you don’t answer the phone outside of office hours. Or, if you need to be on call, you establish some rules for customers who abuse the privilege.

In my first years as a hypnotherapist and coach, I learned not to give my home number to clients (this was in the years before cell phones). Too many called in the evening, just to talk. So what kind of boundaries can you set? It’s just another way of saying “no.”

If people in your personal life demand what you struggle to give, it’s important to use both of those strategies. Learn to say “no” to requests that you know will mean you have to sacrifice something important to you. And establish boundaries for when you will and won’t be available, what you’re willing to do and not do. Especially if they’re things that the person asking can do for themselves. You can’t please everyone, and you need to take care of your well being or you won’t be able to be there for others.

Years ago, I had to end my association with some of the organizations I’d been involved with. They couldn’t accept that I wasn’t at their beck and call anymore. It was hard, and I probably wouldn’t have done it if my health hadn’t been involved. But learning to say “no” was a valuable lesson. It’s one that has served me well in my personal and professional life since.

What can you say “no” to? How can you set boundaries in your life? These are very important abilities to develop. They allow you to prioritize what’s important for you. And when you do that, you’ll reduce your stress and have more peace of mind.

Do you sometimes leap into a situation before you look at it? Does it ever turn out as you hoped? If you think about the action you’re going to take before you commit to it, you’ll get better results. Discover what you can do to improve your results and some questions to ask that can lead you in that direction.

Do you sometimes jump into a situation before you’ve had time to assess it? How often does that turn out the way you hoped? And how can you get better results?

I’m Linda-Ann Stewart, vision strategist, hypnotherapist and speaker. I help women entrepreneurs to focus, gain control, and accelerate to the next level of their business. Today, I’d like to talk to you about how you can get better outcomes by planning before you step into a situation. Many people will leap before they look, and it rarely brings them the results they expected.

Maybe a friend made a suggestion that sounded good to you at the time. For instance, years ago, I took a friend’s advice and joined a gym for 6 months. I hated it, and after the first few visits, the membership went unused. Has anything like that ever happened to you?

Or maybe you made a commitment before you’d thought it through. Such as volunteering for a charity before you knew much about it. Once you found out more, you realized it wasn’t right for you. Have you ever done that?

Or, as entrepreneurs, we often spring into different types of marketing without any idea of whether they work for our business. For example, you decide to network because someone said it was the best thing since sliced bread. But, when you attend an event, you stand in the corner of the room, never meet anyone, and never follow up with those you do meet. Have you known of anyone who did this?

It’s a truism, that, as Ben Franklin said, “If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail.” It feels good to spring into action. You feel like you’re doing something, making progress, building momentum. But all too often, you’re just wasting time and energy because it doesn’t fit into a whole picture. It’s just pieces that don’t fit together.

Don’t get me wrong. Action is important, because without it nothing happens. It also anchors a commitment to change and to move forward. But action needs to be targeted, with a specific reason for doing it. That’s where the plan comes in. Think before you leap.

Some questions to ask yourself: What is your plan for your action? Why are you doing it? What do you expect from it? Will there be any consequences? After you leap, what’s next? What steps are you going to take, and how will you know when you’re getting results?

Think through what you plan to do. When you’re deliberate and intentional about your actions, you’ll be much more successful. They’ll be more integrated with who you are and what you want. So how can you create a thoughtful plan that supports your next steps?

Stop Fighting Yourself

Do you have personality traits that you’re rejecting by trying to fit yourself into a mold that works for others, especially in your career? If so, you’re going to be wasting energy and not being as productive as you could be. Accepting yourself and working with your characteristics will make you much happier and more successful.

Do you have natural characteristics that involves your work life, that you’re fighting against?
I’m not talking about procrastination or perfectionism, which are learned traits. But what natural characteristics are you trying to repress them to fit into what everyone else expects from you? When you do, it’s a form of self-rejection. Not only does it erode your self-esteem, but it reduces your effectiveness.

For instance, years ago, I took a creative writing class that met at 9am every Thursday. I’m not at my peak at that time. I’m functional at best. A group of us from the class formed an organization to sponsor what became an international writing contest. I was secretary of the group and took notes at our meetings. One day, the president suggested we meet at 8am. I’m not a morning person. The person who sat next to me in class said, “Don’t do that to Linda-Ann. Haven’t you noticed that she doesn’t mentally join the class and start participating until 10am?” We all laughed, and because it was true, the president set the meeting at 10am.

How about you? Is there a personality trait you have that you’re fighting against? Are you trying to fit into someone else’s mold? I know that there are times it’s unavoidable. But if you are, you’re wasting your time and energy. They could be better used to accepting your idiosyncrasies and viewing them as your strengths. In other words, you know how to optimize your productivity.

For example, do you work best listening to music? How can you do that in a way that doesn’t affect others? Do you prefer to work in groups? What about teams? Maybe you can find a partner or partners to bounce ideas off of, so you can collaborate with them and have a sense of camaraderie.

When you’re able to honor your personality traits, you build a sense of self-trust and feel better about yourself. What are your idiosyncrasies? How can you accept and adjust them to fit into your work? When you’re able to do this, not only will you be more productive and successful, and be a whole lot happier.

Are You in Alignment with Your Motivation?

Your motivation causes you to take action every day. Sometimes, you want something that doesn’t fit with who you are. In that case, you either achieve your goals or avoid them. Learn 3 tips to align your motivation with what will work for you.

When I talk about motivation in this context, I’m not talking about it as emotional inspiration to get you to make changes. I’m talking about basic motivation, the kind that causes you to take action in everyday situations. Do your inherent motives motivate you to achieve the goals you think you want?

For instance, I had a friend who wanted to be a runner. He’d always pictured himself as a runner, had bought the shoes, read books on it. But actually getting himself out the door to do it… wasn’t happening. It wasn’t right for him. Instead, he found that he preferred the comfort and community of an indoor gym. He had to align his personality and motives with what worked for him.

All you have to do to notice your motives is to look at your life. Are you doing what it is you want to get you where you want to go? If not, check what your motivation might be. You may be wanting something that doesn’t fit with your personality. And since it’s so out of your comfort zone, and out of character, you won’t fulfill it.

However, consider what you can do to satisfy that desire. Scale it back or shift it somehow. When you do follow-up after a networking meeting, if making phone calls makes you cringe, send cards instead. If you want to be an oil painter, but the smell of the paint makes you nauseous, switch to acrylic’s or watercolor. There’s more than one way to climb a mountain.

My coaching tip for you is to:
1st – assess what you truly want.
2nd – become aware of your actions towards it.
3rd – pick a way to achieve it that works for you.
When you align your motives to actions that are natural for you, you’ll be much happier and more successful.

Stay the Course

Do you ever jump into motion without determining where it’s going to take you? If you do, you’ll probably waste time, energy and increase your stress. Learn what you can do to improve your chances of success and get to your destination more easily.

When I was growing up, my father and a neighbor would leave for work at about the same time. They’d drive the same route through rush hour traffic for several miles, before my father would exit. One day, the neighbor and my dad left at the exact same time. On the freeway, she wove in and out of traffic, trying to get ahead. My dad just stayed the course, going with the flow of traffic. When my father finally exited, the neighbor was only 1 car length ahead of him.

What about you? Do you ever try to get ahead by just staying in motion? Does it serve you? Motion without a reason doesn’t usually help. It just wastes time and energy, and keeps you stressed so you can’t think clearly.

It’s better to be deliberate and decisive instead of reactive. The neighbor was reactive, jumping from one lane to the other, looking for a fastest one. She took the short term view and just stayed in motion. It didn’t give her the results she wanted, as she could see from her relationship to my dad’s car, but she kept doing it anyway.

My father was deliberate, deciding to take the long range view, knowing that it was a myth that there would be a faster lane. He didn’t waste gas or let his frustration level climb, like the neighbor did.

My coaching tip is to think things through. This is true for any decision or action. Don’t just leap into motion and be reactive. You won’t get the results you want. Be deliberate and decide on your action ahead of time. And then stay the course. You’ll get to your destination easier, smoother and with a lot less wear and tear on your nerves.

Do you have a goal or dream, but aren’t acting on it or are spinning your wheels? Then something is missing in its inception. If you’re missing a key element, then you won’t be able to be successful. Learn the 3 key elements to check for if you’re stuck and how they’ll help you when they’re present.

Have you set a goal or have a dream, but aren’t doing anything to make it happen? Maybe you are taking action, but you’re just spinning your wheels with it. If either of these is the case, then you’re missing some element that is keeping you in stuck. You may need to check to make sure you have a firm foundation to build on.

The main elements to address when you’re stuck or spinning your wheels are: your vision, your mindset about your vision, and the plan you use to carry out your vision. If any one of these are unclear, undefined or missing, then you won’t be able to successfully move forward.

1st lets take your vision. This is what you want and where you’re going. It needs to be clear and defined. When you have a clear vision, it attracts the right strategies for you to follow, even when you initially don’t know how you’re going to fulfill it.

Our 2nd element is your mindset. This isn’t just about being positive and optimistic. Any negative beliefs about your vision, or attitudes that undermine your motivation will trip you up. When your mindset supports your vision, then your subconscious scans your environment to seek out information and opportunities to further your success.

The 3rd element is your plan. Some people leap into action, without considering whether that action will take them in the direction of their vision. A plan is necessary, as is the follow through with the plan. Actions need to be targeted and consistent, because inconsistent or haphazard actions create inconsistent or haphazard results. This leads to a feast or famine cycle in life or business. For consistent results, perform consistent, targeted actions.
