Are you as successful as you’d like, either personally or professionally? Probably not, because there’s always room for improvement, isn’t there? One of the main places to address to help you rise higher in your life is your mindset. So I’d like to talk a little bit about why a positive mindset is so important and some tips to keep you upbeat that allows you to program your mind for success.

I’m a vision strategist. I work with women service professionals and small business entrepreneurs chart a course for their business that keeps them focused and on track so they experience success on their terms.

And a major part of our work is to align their heart (mindset and passion) with their vision. Do you have problems with your mindset being positive? When I say ‘mindset,’ I’m not just talking about having positive beliefs or attitudes.

Your mindset is a combination of combination of thoughts, beliefs and attitudes about yourself, your vision and your business. It affects your actions, behaviors and the way people respond to you. And it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. You could set yourself up to fulfill a negative expectation when you don’t take an action that would benefit you, or go into a situation believing you’ll fail. Had a situation like that? Having a positive attitude could be helpful because it could improve the overall quality of your mindset.

A positive attitude isn’t a guarantee of success. I wish it was. But you have a much higher likelihood of being successful if you have a positive attitude versus having a negative attitude.

To be more positive, you have to start cleaning up your exposure to negativity, and focus more on activities, mental nourishment and associations that are more constructive. I don’t suggest you just wall yourself off from distressing news and only surround yourself with good cheer and live in a happy cloud. It’s important that you keep up with current events and exercise your compassion and empathy. I just mean don’t get stuck or wallow in painful or upsetting news and information. You want to stay balanced and realistic, just not succumb to pessimism and cynicism.

Do things that keep you upbeat, positive and open to the possibilities. Here are 4 tips on how to do this:

1. Minimize your news consumption. You can be aware and knowledgeable about what’s going on without watching or reading the news 24/7. Focus on what you can change, first in your life, and then in the world.

2. Read uplifting books.
These can be self-help, personal development, spiritual, biographies of those who have overcome odds, novels. In essence, anything that causes you to feel empowered and creates a belief that you can meet any challenge life throws at you. Because you can.

3. Watch inspirational videos. YouTube and the internet is filled with these. Check out TedTalks. You could also watch funny videos that raise your mood.

4. Associate with positive people. We all know people who enjoy criticizing, putting others down and ridiculing them. Avoid them as much as you can. Instead, surround yourself as much as possible with those who are optimistic, encouraging and constructive. You become like those you hang around with.

These are just a few tips on how to focus on the positive side of life. If you do a little research, you can find many others, such as positive self-talk and exercise. As you keep your attention on the positive, you’re building new, more resourceful pathways in the brain, so it becomes easier as time goes on. And it lifts your entire mindset, so your actions are more influential and effective.
